March Madness

Watching some "March Madness" this weekend with the boys (King loves to watch the game, Odan loves to watch the commercials) and the cheerleaders are on camera wearing their midriff outfits, and I say,

M: "Aahh! What happened to their shirts?"

The kids giggle and Odan says,

O: "Sometimes when girls show their belly buttons it's beautiful."

"Say Something"

Listening to "Say Something" on the radio.

O: "Did they say 'Say something I'm giving up on you'?"

M: "Yeah, it's kind of a sad song."

O: "What does 'giving up' mean again?"

M: "It means 'quitting' or 'to quit'."

O: "So 'say something I'm quitting you'?"

M: "Yeah."

O: "Aww." (sadly)

In the hospital #2

M: "Odan, you have wires coming out of your shirt. Are they robot wires?"

O: "Huh?"

M: "Wait, are they turning you into a robot?"

O: "Yeah! They are! Aaahhh! I'm turning into a robot!"

This is how I knew he was feeling better. His sense of humor was coming back.

However, when King and DeeAnn came in to visit the first time, as I was explaining all the tubes and wires to them I said,

M: "And see these wires? This is where they are turning Odan into a robot."

DeeAnn and King both gasped...

D: "What??"

K: "No!"

They totally believed me. The looks on their faces were so sad and devastated. So I quickly said,

M: "No, no, I'm just kidding. They aren't turning Odan into a robot."

Then Odan pipes in,

O: "Yes they are. Look, these wires are really coming out of my skin!"

I had to tell Odan it wasn't a funny joke to King and DeeAnn. They were really scared for a minute.

In the hospital

O: "Wait, this thing is for old people!"

M: "What thing?"

He is pointing to the plastic tubes going into his nose (his oxygen).

O: "This thing."

M: "How do you know it's for old people?"

O: "Because I see the old ladies at church. They have this."

Nothing Compares to You (yes, Sinead O'Conner's song)

Listening to Sinead O'Conner's "Nothing Compares to You"

O: "Mom, what does 'nothing compares to you' mean?"

M: "When she says 'nothing compares to you' she is saying there is nothing in the world better than the person she is talking about."

O: "Because she loves them so much? Is she talking about her husband?"

M: "She is talking about someone she loves very much."

An hour or so later I am doing dishes and Odan comes in and hugs my legs and says,

O: "Mom, I just wanted to tell you I love you. And nothing compares to you."

M: "Aw, thank you Odan. I love you too and nothing compares to you."

He excitedly starts shouting to King and DeeAnn,

O: "Guys! Hey guys! Mom said nothing compares to me!!"

Avicii's "Wake Me Up"

Listening to the radio in the car, Avicii's "Wake Me Up" is playing...

O: "Mom, I don't like this song."

M: "You don't? Why not?"

O: "This song makes me sad."

M: "It does? Why?"

O: "Because he's lost."

M: "He's not lost, he didn't know he as lost."

O: "Oh, so he was playing 'Hide and Go Seek' and he didn't know how to play? He just waited till everyone hid and he counted then didn't know where to look? Maybe that's what happened."

Vicks Vapor Rub

After picking up Odan from school last week,

O: "Mom, I'm not feeling good."

M: "Yeah, I'm sorry. We're going to get you some medicine for your cough."

O: "Okay, but not that DISGUSTING medicine."

M: "Well I like the smell of that medicine."

O: "Ew, it's disgusting!"

He is referring to Vick's Vapor Rub. I had smeared some on his chest the night before. He woke up before school crying because he was "too stinky" to go to school. I washed off the Vicks and he was fine.

The week before when DeeAnn had this cough, we'd put some on her feet with socks and Odan refused to play with her because she was "too stinky".

Who doesn't like the smell of eucalyptus and menthol??

When I cough

O: "Mom, when I cough it feels like my throat explodes. A very spicy throat."

Don't feel good

O: "Mom, I don't feel good. I think I watched too much tv."

M: "Oh, I'm sorry. Dinner is ready, do you want to eat some dinner?"

O: "No, I'm not hungry. I'm just going to take a rest."

He proceeds to go upstairs to his bed and goes to sleep at 5:30pm.

In charge

Odan and DeeAnn were playing in the boys' room and I over hear this,

O: "DeeAnn, you are the queen, so that means you are in charge of the Earth."

Misdirection

O: "Mom, I'm trying to do a magic trick with these four cards."

M: "Okay."

He stands in front of the mirror clapping his hands together while the cards lay in his hands.

O: "Mom, this is called misdirection. It's supposed to make the cards disappear. But it's not working."

He keeps clapping expecting the cards to disappear. Then finally lets them drop to the ground."

O: "See. Misdirection."

Read-a-thon

The theme for this school year is "Woodstock is Out of This World". So the read-a-thon theme is "Reading is Out of This World". I've been diligent at having them read a decent number of minutes every day. By Thursday Odan tells me,

O: "Mom, reading is 'Out of This World'. So we don't have to read anymore, since it's out of this world."

Picking up Odan

Picking up Odan from Kindergarten on Friday, he runs out excitedly and exclaims,

O: "Mom! I'm a WINNER!"

(Read-a-thon week, they draw names and give out prizes)

Recycle bin

O: "Mom, where is the 'Sega' box? I want to show it to King."

M: "It's in the garbage, I threw it away."

O: "Mom, you threw it in the garbage? You should have put it in the recycle bin so it could be made into something else!"

M: "I did put it in the recycle bin."

O: "You did? So now it will be made into something new?"

M: "Yep."

Hey mom

O: "Hey mom, your butt is bigger than my face."

M: "Odan, that's not very nice."

O: "Why? It is bigger than my face."

M: "Well, I guess you are right. That's just a weird thing to say."

Red eyes

At the library after storytime the kids were encouraged to paint a picture. I was right next to Odan as he began painting. Here is our conversation...

O: "There's the head, and here are the RED eyes!"

M: "Oh wow, red eyes?"

O: "Yeah! And a red body!"

He finishes up and I say,

M: "Oh wow, Odan. Who did you paint?"

O: "That's you mom."

I looked at the mom next to me and we chuckled. I told her I wasn't sure if I was flattered to be his muse or concerned he views me with red eyes.

**Note - the watercolors were quite runny so I made sure to keep the picture level as we wandered around the library while it dried. Also I didn't want my "red eyes" to stream down and become "red eyes with red tears". That would have been a slightly more horrifying rendition.

Clip-on earrings

Odan came downstairs from DeeAnn's room sporting these clip-on earrings. Awesome.
